* * 10th August 2004 TWELVE Wiltshire landmarks are battling to be the people's choice as their favourite part of the county’s heritage.

People are being asked to vote now to decide which of the 12 short–listed candidates will be crowned as the winner of the Window on Wiltshire’s Heritage poll.

The poll was launched in 2002 when work started on the Window on Wiltshire’s Heritage website, a major project to put the county’s history and culture on the internet.

Since then, votes have been pouring in for historic sites and landmarks throughout Wiltshire and Swindon.

The nominations have been whittled down to 12 finalists, with the last phase of voting taking place over the next few weeks.

The 12 candidates are Avebury, Brunel’s Box Tunnel, Figsbury Ring, the Kennet and Avon Canal, Malmesbury Abbey, North Meadow at Cricklade, Old Wardour Castle, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Stourhead, Swindon Railway Village and Works, and Westbury White Horse.

The winner will be announced when the site is formally launched at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum’s lecture hall on Friday, September 17.

The introductory page for the 12 nominated candidates can be found by going to www.wowheritage.org.uk/nominations

The page gives a link to each of the 12 candidates, with information about and pictures of each.

Kate Turnbull, Window on Wiltshire’s Heritage project officer, said: ’Television viewers have recently been voting to save Britain’s heritage on the BBC’s Restoration programme.

’Now people in Wiltshire have a chance to vote for their favourite part of Wiltshire’s heritage.

’There have been many nominations over the last two years, but 12 historic sites and landmarks have clearly emerged as the frontrunners. It will now be up to the people of Wiltshire to choose their favourite.’

Window on Wiltshire’s Heritage provides a treasure trove of information about the county’s heritage covering eight themes.

The WOW website, www.wowheritage.org.uk, allows users to find out about Wiltshire’s heritage by going to the ’Discover’ pages and searching by theme or keyword.

Visitors can find out about Wiltshire’s nature, the county’s archaeology, its museums, architecture, county records and archives, photo exhibitions, art and local history.

The WOW site is run by Wiltshire County Council and has been funded through a £425,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

The grant was made through the BLF’s digitisation programme, which aims to make the resources of the UK’s galleries, libraries, museums, and other centres of learning available to people via the internet.
